Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Floating Farm?

The growing of vegetables in containers at sea. Aquaponic farming combines plants and fish in a circular symbiotic system where both exceed and flourish.

How long will it take you to start making money?

We will begin generating revenue within 6 months and break even will be at 18 months.

Who is your ideal customer?

B2B including grocery stores, restaurants (especially farm to table), government contracts, especially schools and military.

Who are your competitors?

Other organic producers of vegetables.

What are your strengths and advantages over your competitors?

We use aquaponics, which requires fewer inputs and will grow fish (tilapia, trout, and bass, among others) that can add additional revenue. Container farming has distinct advantages over crops grown in the field, or in a greenhouse.

What are your weaknesses or disadvantages?

We use a lot of power, which requires redundant backup systems. Our operation is capital intensive to scale.

Why aren’t your competitors doing the same thing you are doing?

There are people who are dabbling with growing in containers, however, we will be the first to scale the process. The world’s largest container farm is 10 containers and we want to take that up to the hundreds.

How do your features differ?

Aquaponics and circular agriculture allow us to reduce waste and reduce the number of inputs required compared to hydroponics, resulting in lower operating costs and higher profit potential.

What is unique about the company?

We are combining multiple methods of farming (aquaponics and container farming) into something that as an aggregate is brand new.

What intellectual property do you own?

The data surrounding the conditions each plant & ecosystem needs to grow and thrive for optimal yields, the design and SOPs for operation and maintenance.

How do you grow vegetables in salt water?

Our aquaponics is a freshwater system that sits on the ocean as opposed to in the ocean. Most plants will not tolerate salt water.

Why not just grow aquaponically in a greenhouse?

At some point, the greenhouse will need ventilation and in doing so, you leave your crop and system especially vulnerable to an influx of pests. How is our system different? We will grow in specially customized containers that are atmospherically controlled to the exact temperature that a specific crop needs and the watering schedule and lighting can also be customized. One of the biggest reasons we will grow at sea is that when you are on the ocean, further than 25 miles from any coastline – there are no insect pests there. You do not have grasshoppers, cut worms, aphids, horn worms, and cabbage moths, among other insects. We also would not have animal problems such as rodents, deer, rabbit, raccoon, or birds. Threat of chemical drift from neighboring farm fields would also be a problem of the past.

What crops do you intend to grow?

Some crops are very well suited to aquaponics and other’s aren’t. Some basics that we intend to grow include lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumbers, kale and celery; herb favorites including mint, parsley, cilantro/coriander, dill, basil, oregano, thyme and chamomile. Strawberries and small melons will also be viable crops.

How did you come up with this idea?

Frank and Cinda have been dirt farmers and understand the struggles faced there. Those struggles turned us to learn and master growing aquaponically. As a US Navy Veteran, Frank intimately understands the perks of living at sea without pests and the challenges that growing at sea may bring us. That foundation, combined with their love for food and fresh cuisine, has fueled this venture.

What happens if a member of the team were to pass away?

Our key person risk mitigation includes life insurance policies for key leaders as well as a disability plan. Additionally, cross-training can ensure that procedures and information is shared, including SOPs with regular updates. Lastly, a keen eye for future key leader advancement and/or possible successors will offer additional cushioning.
